Wilson Latin American Research Funds Application

The purpose of the Latin America Research Scholarship is to provide a means for Texas State University to engage with universities, agencies, and research centers that function in Latin America for the purpose of collaborative research, teaching, and outreach. It is the hope of donors Kenneth J. Wilson and his wife Verena that by working locally with other nationalities the university’s shared value of a diversity of people and ideas, a spirit of inclusiveness, a global perspective, and a shared sense of community will be realized.

Eligibility & Criteria

International Latin American Students, holding an F-1 visa, are eligible to apply. (Latin American countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela, Anguilla, Aruba, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Montserrat, Sint Maarten)

Enrolled at Texas State University for the upcoming Fall semester as full-time undergraduate students (12 hours or more) or full-time graduate students (9 hours or more) who meet the criteria outlined below.

Must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA average.

Must complete a minimum of a 200-word essay describing your academic accomplishments and how the scholarship will help you achieve your academic and career objectives. Include details on your area of study or research.

If awarded a scholarship, the awardee will submit a 1-2 page report about what the funds helped you to accomplish.

Awardees can receive the award more than once, however, priority will be given to first-time awardees. 

Exchange students are not eligible for this scholarship.

Award Details:

Scholarship A: Five $1,000 scholarships for degree-seeking international students from Latin America.

Open to undergraduate or graduate students of any major

Open to new or continuing students at Texas State University.

Scholarship B: Five $1,000 scholarships for international degree-seeking students from Latin America.

Open to new or continuing Ph.D. students at Texas State in the following programs: Aquatic Resources, Integrative Biology, or Geography.

Essay Topic

Describe your academic accomplishments and how the scholarship will help you achieve your academic and career objectives. Include details on your area of study or research.

Minimum of 200 words.

I understand that if awarded a scholarship I will need to submit a 5-minute presentation and 2-3 page report to the International Office. *
I understand a Wilson Latin American Scholarship is not a competitive scholarship and will not qualify for in-state tuition. *

Deadline to apply is April 30th 

Selection Process:  Awards will be given to the best-qualified applicants as determined by a selection committee. The selection committee will be made up by the Associate Vice President for International Affairs, the Director for International Student and Scholar Services, and the Director of International Marketing and Recruitment.

Notifications:

Applications may be submitted from January 1st through April 30th.  Awardees will be notified by May 14th.  Funds will be disbursed 10 days prior to the start of the upcoming Fall semester.
