On-Campus Employment

If you have been offered a job on campus you should bring the following forms to the Social Security Administration Office:

1.  You must first have an employment offer.

2.  Your department/employer must write a letter requesting the International Office to write a letter on your behalf to the Social Security Administration.  The letter should be in the correct format, on your department's letterhead, and follow the job offer letter template.

3.  Bring the job offer letter to the International Office and fill out a proof of enrollment request form.   When the International Office has both of these they can get an advisor make a proof of enrollment letter for you.

4.  When these documents are ready and you have picked them up from the International Office you can take them along with your immigration documents (passport, visa, I-94), to the Social Security Office in San Marcos, located near the intersection of I-35 and Hwy 80.  Click here for Hours and Directions

CPT (Curricular Practical Training)

If you are eligible for CPT, have gotten it approved by an academic advisor, and have applied at the International Office and received a new I-20 with CPT authorization on the 3rd page, you simply present your third page of your I-20 at the Social Security Office to apply for a Social Security Card.

OPT (Optical Practical Training)

Once you have applied for OPT and received your EAD card, you must bring that as proof of your employment authorization to the Social Security Office.
